Launching a Worker-Owned Promotoras Cooperative UpValley Family Centers is proud to serve as the incubator organization for the launch of a new Worker-Owned Cooperative, developed in partnership with our Promotoras. This cooperative will empower Promotoras—trained community health workers with deep linguistic and cultural connections to the communities they serve—by enhancing their economic security, offering career-building opportunities, and amplifying their influence within the community. Through the planning and incubation phase, cooperative members will gain essential business management and operational skills, access benefits, and receive fair compensation for their work, skills, and experience. Our Cooperative Developer is actively guiding the Promotoras through the steps to form their own self-sustaining business, with technical assistance from the Democracy At Work Institute. We are grateful to the Latino Community Foundation and Just Recovery Initiative for their partnership helping us to advance this exciting effort. Remembering Elaine Jones We are deeply saddened to hear about the passing of one of our biggest advocates, Elaine Jones. Elaine was an incredible supporter of the UpValley Family Centers’ work (among other nonprofits). She served on the board of the Calistoga Family Center (pre-merger) and the UpValley Family Centers. She was passionate about our work and was an early advocate of the merger – believing we’d have greater impact and reach as one organization serving the upvalley. She was extremely committed to our community and worked closely with many of us over many years. She was so driven to make positive impacts to enhance people’s lives, and she did it in so many ways. Her endless drive to help our communities was infectious and she will be greatly missed by all of us. |

Do you have a 5-minute plan? An alarming new study has shown that 58% of Californians lack a disaster kit, and 69% do not have any disaster plans. California continues to be at risk from unpredictable wildfires. New growth of vegetation, grass, and plants due to the rain also poses a significant risk once these fuels become tinder dry, as they can promote rapid fire growth. Evacuating from your home early can mean the difference of life and death. When a wildfire or other disaster strikes, be prepared to leave at a moment’s notice. Having a 5-minute plan with an escape route can get you and your family out and safe. If you need additional time to evacuate or have livestock, you should pack up and leave when the warning is issued and not wait for an evacuation order. Visit firefightersonyourside.org for more information on creating a 5-minute plan and being prepared for disaster. |
