Busy making spirits bright

This month has been filled with holiday programming for all ages! Our Senior Wellness team co-hosted a Holiday Lunch in Calistoga with Rianda House for 28 older adults. Attendees decorated cookies, played holiday-themed games, received a gifted blanket, and had a delicious lunch while Christmas music filled the room.

Our CLAR@ youth mentoring program hosted a posada style Community Night in St. Helena and Calistoga where parents and students painted away the holiday stress by decorating Christmas ornaments and enjoyed sweet treats! Our Student Assistance Program Case Managers provided fun prizes and information about the Positive Parenting Program (Triple P) available through UpValley Family Centers.

Our gingerbread house decorating party in Calistoga was hosted at the Calistoga Community Center by 6 UVFC staff, 3 student volunteers, and 1 adult volunteer, and had 140 attendees, including 61 adults and 79 children. Our Community Voices - A Client Story

*Due to the sensitive nature of this story, we respect the anonymity of the storyteller.

A long-time resident of the area always found joy in gardening and cooking, often sharing meals with friends. But in 2019, her life took a difficult turn when she recognized her marriage had become abusive. Leaving was courageous but brought new challenges.

After her divorce, she returned to an uninhabitable home burdened with unpaid rent. She worked 50-hour weeks as an Uber driver to cover expenses and home repairs, but in March 2024, health issues forced her to stop driving. With no income, she faced losing her home and turned to UpValley Family Centers for help.

I was a wreck when I walked into my first appointment,” she recalls. “But Kimberly (Senior Wellness Case Manager) was so positive and encouraging. She made me feel like I could get through it.”

The family center provided one month’s rental assistance and helped her secure three additional months through the Season of Sharing program. When she needed further support, they helped her apply for the SHARE program. They also provided practical items like a walker and an iPad to improve her quality of life through mobility and connection to others.

They made my life easier in ways I didn’t even know I needed,” she reflects. Asking for help wasn’t easy, but she found dignity and compassion at UpValley Family Centers. “I’ve been so grateful—not just for the help but for how they gave it. I knew they were on my side.”

Looking ahead, she hopes UpValley Family Centers continues its positive impact. “If you can maintain your amazing team and their can-do attitudes, you’ll keep making a difference for the next 25 years.”

If you are an older adult needing rental assistance and would like more information on eligibility for Seasons of Sharing or Napa County's SHARE Program, please contact us at (707) 965-5010.

As the year winds to a close, we're so proud of our work together at UpValley Family Centers. Every day our work demonstrates what it looks like to show up as a community rooted in care and connection.

We know that the year ahead will bring uncertainty and likely new challenges for our community. But we also know that we will continue to show up for our people no matter what they need. We’ve done it before through wildfires, pandemics, and more, and we will be here no matter what 2025 brings our way. The UpValley Family Centers remains steadfast in our mission and in our guiding principles- trust, dignity, respect & cultural sensitivity, equity, and collaborative action.

This year we celebrated twenty-five years as a touchpoint for hope, health, and opportunity for generations of local families and our work continues to expand and evolve. Building on decades of supporting families, our community is excited and empowered to make real, lasting structural change while we continue to serve as a critical asset and resource for our neighbors.

Make a donation today and join us to create a brighter, healthier future for all the families who call Napa home. Thank you and happy holidays!
