Education Team on the Road

Our education team has been on the road, sharing ideas and expanding their knowledge to enhance children, youth, and school-based programs!

At the Community Schools Empower Summit in San Francisco, Jenny Ocon (UVFC Executive Director), Marcela Rodriguez (UVFC Education Program Manager), and Dr. Audra Pittman (CJUSD Superintendent) presented The Calistoga Example: The Case for Community Schools in a Small Rural District. Their presentation highlighted how CJUSD and UVFC have implemented a districtwide community school initiative over the past 8 years, serving 860 students, 80% of whom are socioeconomically disadvantaged.

Last week, Marcela Rodriguez and Karina Solis (UVFC Youth Program Coordinator) attended the CADCA Mid-Year Training Institute in Grapevine, TX. They joined 2,400+ attendees from 20+ countries and learned from 150+ prevention experts throughout the week. Sessions varied from family/youth engagement through coalition work, sustainability, and current and new substance-related trends.

Back in California, Juana Navarro (UVFC Youth Specialist) and Mariana Martinez (UVFC Youth Diversion Coordinator) attended the Friday Night Live Leadership Training Institute in Visalia, where they learned about encouraging and empowering young people as active leaders and community resources. Mariana shared, "It was a great experience to participate and learn about a program whose focus is to help youth make better choices, help them grow as students and individuals, and help them have a positive impact on their peers and community."

Save the Date: Back to School Community Celebration 2023!

Save the date! Our 20th annual Back to School Community Celebration, co-hosted with the Calistoga Joint Unified School District, will occur on Friday, August 25, from 4:30 to 7:30 PM on Berry Field at Calistoga Elementary School. Join us for this joyful tradition that our community – both the young and the young at heart – looks forward to at the end of every summer. We are excited to welcome parents, children, teachers, and community members of all ages to connect and - most importantly - have fun! This free event includes a meal for every attendee, live music, a climbing wall, a service provider fair with 40+ partner organizations, games, prizes, and a "Migration is Beautiful" art workshop with Favianna Rodriguez!

This event is generously sponsored by Pacific Gas & Electric Company, Jones Family Vineyards - Elaine and Rick Jones, The Doctors Company, Westamerica Bank, Damian Maldanado Memorial Foundation, and MCE. There is still time to become a sponsor! If you are interested in learning more about our sponsorship opportunities, please email our Development Director, Cambria Kirby at ckirby@upvalleyfamilycenters.org.
