One Family’s Journey

Calistoga residents Epifanio and Maria dreamt of providing their children, Lupita, Oscar, and Asusena, with the opportunities that they never had themselves. As immigrants from Mexico, they’ve faced many barriers to making that dream a reality.

Epifanio and Maria describe that the “turning point” was when they first sought assistance from UpValley Family Centers in 2017 to renew their green cards. It was then that they learned about the different services available, including support through the citizenship process and free tax preparation.

The family center helped the couple become US citizens in 2020. They have returned each year to file their taxes and used that opportunity to revisit their financial goals, which include investing and saving for their children’s educational aspirations and helping them to become successful young adults. Their oldest is now attending University and they helped her buy her first car.

Epifanio shares, “I really appreciate the time and patience provided by the center’s staff. They have helped me understand my financial opportunities and the importance of saving for my children’s education. We want to show our children that not only are we saving, but we are investing in creating opportunities for their future in any way that we can.”

Success Stories like Epifanio and Maria’s are made possible thanks to the generous support from Wells Fargo, Napa Valley Community Foundation, Napa Valley Vintners, Redwood Credit Union, and United Way of the Bay Area. Congratulations Graduates

Congratulations to the most recent Building and Construction Trades Program graduates! Pictured above are several students from the Calistoga cohort. The program took place from January – June, reaching 25 adults with classes offered in Calistoga and Napa, and is creating a pathway to a career in the construction trades. This program is a partnership between Napa Valley Adult Education, Napa Valley College, Napa County Office of Education, Calistoga Joint Unified School District, On the Move, and UpValley Family Centers, and generously supported by the Napa Valley Community Foundation. It has allowed students to learn the essential knowledge and skills that are needed to work in an entry level construction job.
