2023 Community Impact Report

As we celebrate our 25th Anniversary in 2024, we wanted to create a special report that not only highlights 2023, but the past 25 years as a whole. At the beginning of this year, we started collecting stories from current and past clients, volunteers, partners, staff members, donors, and community members for a series titled "Our Community Voices." These stories show the impact of the family center from different vantage points – offering unique insights into the role we’ve played over the past 25 years.

As you read these stories and hope you will see our values and guiding principles in action – trust, dignity, respect & cultural sensitivity, equity, and collaborative action. These stories represent the threads that tie us all together as a community. They show us that our roots are deep and our family tree is big – and you are an important part of our story too.

Over $28,600 raised from Napa Valley Pickleball Classic

The morning started off cool and crisp, but the competition (and temperature) heated up as the 1st Annual Napa Valley Pickleball Classic got underway at the Crane Park in St. Helena. Hosted in partnership with St. Helena Parks & Recreation, the Classic brought together 64 players, 40 clinic participants, and well over 100 cheering spectators in a first-of-its-kind community gathering that raised over $28,600 for UpValley Family Centers.

The level of competition and play in both the Advanced and Intermediate tournaments was high and exciting, with some calling it St. Helena’s “Pickleball Wimbledon!” In the Advanced Tournament, Carolyn and Sam Loomis took first place while Ian McCaffrey and Lindsey Krill took second. In the Intermediate Tournament, first place went to Luis Aguirre & Henry Calforda while Shannon Belknap & Raymond Beutler placed second.

This event was made possible thanks to the amazing support from the volunteer planning committee, St. Helena Parks & Recreation, UpValley Family Centers, community volunteers, and our generous sponsors - Boeschen Vineyards, The Watermark at Napa Valley, Veronica Beard, Buty & Curliano LLP, Caitlin Stuart Communications, GALLICA Wine, Joint Physical Therapy, Jumping Goat Vineyard, MCE, Paddletek Pickleball, Pont Neuf Wines, Robin M. Rocha – Merrill Lynch, Selkirk Sport, Stephens Family Wine, A11N SPORTS, Charles Krug Winery, Dakota Shy, Gaderian Wines, INSPIRé Pilates Studio, The Joel Toller Team, Michelle Wagner Real Estate, Monteverdi Consulting, Salvestrin Winery, Schramsberg Vineyards, W Commercial Real Estate, Whitehall Lane Winery, Ame & Lulu, Bespoke Napa Valley, The Dilly Co., Gearbox Sports, Georgie and Lou, Golden State Pickle Works, Jigsaw Health, The Pickleball Highlife, USA Pickleball, and Sportago, and Tangerine Paddle.

Latino Mens Group Visit to Sunrise Horse Rescue

Horses Rosemary and Blue enjoyed attention from our 'Conversaciones con Los Abuelos' Latino Men's Group during their visit to Sunrise Horse Rescue in Calastoga this month. Conversaciones con Los Abuelos is a cross-generational project to connect older Latino men, many of whom have limited English proficiency, with Latino youth involved in UVFC’s teen mentoring program. Twice-monthly men’s group meetings in Calistoga will focus on creative activities such as board games, art projects, and storytelling, and physical activities such as dance and movement.
