Lending Circles

We are pleased to announce a new partnership with the Mission Asset Fund to bring Lending Circles upvalley!

Lending Circles is a social loan program, managed by the Mission Asset Fund (MAF), that provides an innovative and safe way for working families to save money and build or improve their credit. Inspired by informal community lending practices around the globe, Lending Circles are a peer-to-peer lending tool: each member of a Circle contributes a monthly payment, and each month a new member of the Circle receives the loan, until every member has had their turn. Lending circles are formed between 6-12 people, and loan amounts range from as little as $300 to $2,400.

Lending Circles have been used to pay down debt, put a down payment on a car, save for college, or build an emergency expense fund. And because MAF reports to all three major credit bureaus, Lending Circles allow members to establish and improve their credit: participants raise their score an average of 49 points over a 6-month period.

As a licensed Lending Circle provider, the UpValley Family Centers will provide direct and ongoing support to program participants, supplemented by financial literacy education and other resources. MAF will provide loan servicing and technical support to ensure program success. This is made possible thanks to funding from Tipping Point Community, Napa Valley Community Foundation, and Napa Valley Vintners/Auction Napa Valley.

The first UVFC Lending Circle will launch in the Fall of 2019. For more information, contact Joleen Cantera at the UpValley Family Centers at (707) 965-5010 ext. 311 or lendingcircles@upvalleyfamilycenters.org.

Volunteers in service to students

Over the past school year, 34 community members volunteered as weekly tutors for students in St. Helena schools, grades K-5, generating a total of 42 hours of tutoring support each week throughout the school year. Tutors addressed specific student needs as identified by their classroom teachers and progress was made in specific Math and English skills, and overall in student confidence levels. Over the course of the year, tutors also assisted with school-wide events including family math nights and open houses. Students enjoyed the individualized attention and having a trusted caring adult who they could rely on to help them. We are so grateful for the dedication of our volunteer tutors! If you are interested in volunteering in the coming school year, please contact us at info@upvalleyfamilycenters.org.

Save the date

Our annual Back to School Family Celebration will take place on Friday, August 30 from 5:30-7:30pm. Please join us for a festive evening that will include children's activities, entertainment, a free meal, and an extensive community resource fair. The event will be held at Berry Field, on the campus of Calistoga Elementary School - and is a great way to help us celebrate 20 years of serving the Calistoga community. Special thanks to our sponsors for making this event possible: Elaine and Rick Jones, Abreu Vineyard and David Abreu Vineyard Management, Napa Valley Wealth Management, The Doctors Company, Westamerica Bank, Calistoga Rotary, Damian Maldonado Memorial Foundation, and Silverado Ace Hardware.

Construction Trades Program Orientation

Are you interested in learning the necessary skills to get a job in the building or construction trades? UpValley Family Centers has partnered with Napa Valley Adult School, Napa Valley College, Calistoga Unified School District, and On The Move, to bring a Construction Trades course for adults to Calistoga this fall. Participants will: learn to identify, predict, prevent and stop potential hazards in the workplace; learn essential math skills needed in construction; receive hands on training with a range of tools; learn to read blueprints; and more! It is mandatory to attend an orientation if you are interested in this program. Orientation dates will be held in Calistoga on August 14th and 28th at 6pm at Calistoga High School. For more information or to register for an orientation, contact Susana Garcia-Sanchez at sgarcia@upvalleyfamilycenters.org or call (707) 965-5010 ext. 501.
